Remember when Wilson Valdez pitched a scoreless 19th inning against the Cincinnati Reds in late May last season? Remember how he earned the win? Did you ever think he would be a Red the next season?
Yeah, me neither.
Today it was announced that the Phillies had traded Wilson Valdez to the Reds. In exchange, the Phils will receive LHP Jeremy Horst. No, not horse. Horst. He is a 26 year-old reliever who has only pitched 12 big league games. Acquiring a new reliever (especially a lefty) adds even more depth to the Phillies’ refurbished bullpen.
Saying goodbye to Wilson is going to be hard. Not seeing him pitch in every 19th inning will cause a stinging sensation, but as long as he’s not a New York Met, I wish him the best.
